Lavecon 2019 – Content Reveal

Frontier have announced details of forthcoming content as shown at Lavecon 2019. You can find this below or on the official site, here. The Post Beyond: An Overview section has been updated with the below details along with a new page for both of the September and December releases.

Hello everyone,

Elite Dangerous commanders from across the galaxy have come to celebrate all things Elite Dangerous at this year’s Lavecon.

The event is very much in full swing and moments ago, the team had the pleasure to take to the stage and unveil a few details about what’s coming next to Elite Dangerous in the September update. In addition to all of that, we also revealed what commanders can expect at the end of the year!

If you weren’t able to attend Lavecon this year, rest assured that we have you covered! Here’s a breakdown of everything that was revealed:

Discovery Scanner Special with Dav Stott – Lavecon Special!

Dav, Lead Server Developer, started the presentation by hosting his very own episode of Discovery Scanner, detailing some of the work made when we introduced Background Simulation faction changes in Beyond – Chapter Four. Rest assured, if you weren’t able to attend, we’ll be bringing back the episode in a future livestream!

New “In Ship” Starter Experience

Following on from what we set out to achieve with this year’s initial updates, we will be introducing a whole new starting experience right from the cockpit of a commander’s first ship, a loaned Sidewinder. With clearer instructions and guidance during the beginning of Elite Dangerous, we believe this will lead to a more engaging way to learn the basics and help commanders understand the tools they have at their disposal to become fully-fledged pilots. We can’t wait to see how these new commanders will involve themselves in the galaxy in the same way many of you have!

At the start of the experience, commanders will be guided through essential pilot training by a flight instructor from the Pilots Federation. During this training, a number of lessons will be taught to commanders, from space flight to combat.

  • Basic flight controls and scanning.
  • Supercruise and navigation.
  • A combat exercise around a megaship.
  • Culminating with the final lesson: completing one’s first Hyperspace Jump and docking at a starport.

All of the training will include VO across our supported languages, so whether you’re a commander, un commandant or ein kommandant, you’ll be able to follow each exercise without issue!

Veteran commanders out there who wish to experience the training will also be able to access it in the ‘Training Section’ via the right-hand panel.

New Livery System and Virtual Currency: Arx

Those on consoles will already be familiar with the concept of Frontier Points and, as part of the September Update, we’re reworking and rebranding them as Arx, across all platforms (including PC), ensuring the experience to acquire cosmetics is shared equally for commanders on any platform. This new currency can be purchased, as well as earned by simply playing the game, to acquire Game Extras such as Paint Jobs, Ship Kits, Bobbleheads and more!

As always with our optional additional purchases, Arx can only be used to buy cosmetic Game Extras and will not be used to introduce and acquire pay-to-win purchases. Ultimately, Arx will enable us to…

  • Bring parity across all of our platforms
At the current time, PC commanders purchase cosmetics directly from the Frontier Store with real world currency, while those on consoles must first purchase Frontier Points before acquiring that new and shiny Paint Job. With the introduction of Arx, the method of purchasing and spending Arx will be the same experience regardless of what platform you’re on.
  • Allow commanders to earn customisation items through gameplay
As part of the update to the livery system and the introduction of Arx, commanders will be able to acquire cosmetic items by simply playing the game! We won’t ask commanders to change how they play, simply being an active player and engaging with the game is all that’s required. A number of Arx can be earned each week and will be instantly added to a player’s Arx balance and can be spent there and then, or saved for later. We’ll have more details on how these can be earned in-game and the amount you can earn, closer to the release of the September Update.
  • Introduce a new, flexible and informed choice when purchasing Game Extras
We’ve made improvements to the entire in-game ship livery system, providing commanders with previews of all the different customisation options for their ships and multiple angles!Commanders will be able to purchase individual Game Extras that were previously only available in entire packs. For example, if you wanted the Anaconda White Pharaoh Paint Job, you would no longer need to purchase the entire Anaconda Horus Paint Pack to obtain it. We’re still going to be putting together bundles and packages, but this new system will allow commanders to buy the majority of Game Extras individually.
  • Offering commanders the ability to change their ship’s appearance from the main menu
One of the biggest improvements we are introducing is the ability to access the ship livery from the main menu, so even explorers out in the black will be able to change up their ship’s appearance without needing to head all the way back to civilization!

Please read our FAQ for all the information and post any of your questions about Arx here.

We couldn’t end the presentation without a glimpse of what’s coming at the end of the year: FLEET CARRIERS.

We’ll let the video below do the talking —MASSIVE FRAMESHIFT SURGE DETECTED–

We’ll have more details about the September Update and Fleet Carriers in the near future, so keep an eye on all of our future announcements and social channels!

We’d also like to extend a big thank you to all of the organisers of Lavecon and the commanders who are attending today to share their passion for all things Elite Dangerous. It’s time for us to get back to the action, so see you soon… and fly safe, commanders!

Beyond: Chapter 4 – Beta is Live!

On the 30th October 2018 Frontier released the Beta for Chapter 4 (3.3) of Beyond. This is available to all PC owners of the game (both the base game and Horizons). You can get the full lowdown on the release here, or:

Game Director Laurence Oldham posted this message on the official forum,

Dear Commanders,

It is with a feeling of anticipation and excitement that later today we release Beyond – Chapter Four’s open PC beta, giving you the first opportunity to get your hands on with the biggest Elite Dangerous update of 2018 ahead of its official launch later this year. With that in mind, I wanted to explain how the beta process works for the newest Commanders among you and how we can work together to make this a successful beta phase for Chapter Four.

It’s been a long journey since we first announced our plans for this Chapter at Frontier Expo in October 2017 and we have been hard at work ever since, implementing many ambitious ideas and taking a deep look into aspects like Elite’s Background Simulation, Codex, and Exploration; just a few of the features you’ll be able to test during the first part of our open beta from this afternoon.

However, our journey is not yet complete.

Chapter Four will be the biggest influx of new content for Elite Dangerous in 2018 and it represents the culmination of our combined efforts during many months of development. To ensure the results will be as good as we can possibly make them, we would invite you to join us in this final opportunity to identify and fix any issues together. For us, this open beta is a vital part of the development process and our hope is that you, our dedicated community, will participate, enjoy, and let us know what you experience. Any problems you encounter during your travels, please take the time to report them to us here. Having this one central location for all Commanders to register feedback is very important as it allows us to easily collate and register comments, bugs, and suggestions. We have assigned a dedicated team to track all your reports as they come in and we are committed to improving Chapter Four based on your observations.

As we progress through the weeks, new features and new content will become available for you to try out and report on.

We are currently completing our pre-flight checks and we expect to be ready to launch shortly after 15:00 UTC. All that’s left is to say a huge thank you to everyone taking part, I really hope you enjoy it.

Laurence

The first Beta phase will feature all the features and changes seen in the first two livestreams. You can read all the details known so far about Chapter 4 here. In anticipation of this and with permission from Factabulous on the Official Forum I’ve reproduced the handy Beta FAQ.

> Beta FAQ

  • The Beta appears as a new option to start in the launcher when it is available, normal game will remain available during beta.
  • No, consoles don’t participate in the Beta. Yes other games have Beta access on consoles, ED does not.
  • To reduce the clutter in the launcher you can add the /edh option to your launcher shortcut. You are welcome.
  • No, we don’t know how large the beta is yet. CMDR Thrust from Bradford knows, but he’s too busy walking around an Atmos planet on his space legs with his NPC crew. (long standing forum joke)
  • No, you cannot take anything you find in the Beta out of the Beta
  • Your commander will be based off a copy of the live game taken during the last few weeks
  • Values in the Beta may not reflect the final game – often mission spawn rates are changed, and we can expect broker rates to change. Probably.
  • The beta may restart / become unavailable without notice. It’s a beta. Chillax.
  • No, you will not keep any unlocked tech broker recipes after the beta.
  • Anything you do in the Beta does not affect your main CMDR
  • Make sure you are running the Beta before doing destructive things. Beta often has a watermark so you can check. But double check…
  • If you are not where you want to be then FD may respond to move requests in the Beta, if you ask nicely.
  • Or you can kill your ship and respawn at the starter system if you want to get back to the bubble.
  • You can also reset your CMDR, sometimes Beta resets will set extra money/other things so you can get back to testing – check details in the beta before resetting!
  • No, you cannot take anything you find in the Beta out of the Beta
  • You need to remove the beta files after the beta, but it might be worth keeping the around until the full release as the files are allegedly used instead of downloading
  • No, you cannot take anything you find in the Beta out of the Beta
  • Report bug as beta tickets. Feel free to add your information onto existing tickets, but they are reports – not discussions.
  • Talk about the beta in the beta forums. Console users probably don’t want to hear about cool stuff they can’t access yet.
  • No point in putting in feature requests. Beta means the code is about ready to release, it will get tweaks, but not features (Many will ignore this and get irate)
  • No, you cannot take anything you find in the Beta out of the Beta.

Beyond: Chapter 4 – Beta Announced

On the 15th October at 2pm Frontier announced the details of the Beta for Beyond: Chapter 4 along with a short promo trailer. The details can be seen below. Other web pages on this site will be updated to reflect this and any further news. You can see the full details on the official site here, or below including the trailer.

“Hello Commanders,

“With much anticipation, we’re pleased to announce that the beta for Chapter Four will be available to all PC Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons players on Tuesday 30 October!

“In order to focus the public testing on specific aspects of Chapter Four, we will be unlocking different content over a number of different weeks. You can find out the schedule that content will be added to the beta here:

beta4info

“We are expecting beta milestones to go live on the Tuesday of each week. However, we will update you in the News and Announcement forums as each update is made available.

“As always we welcome your feedback on our dedicated beta and bug report forums. These reports, and the data provided, by these beta tests are incredibly valuable and useful in the development of Elite Dangerous. You can find a breakdown of Chapter Four’s features below:

Exploration

“The Analysis Mode with the improved Exploration Discovery Scanner and Detailed Discovery Scanner, is a game-changing, brand new way for all Commanders to explore the Milky Way galaxy. After the initial scan of the system, you will then be able to tune your scanners to find stellar bodies and other phenomena. Unidentified Signal Sources and conflict zones will also appear as dotted lines within this mode, allowing you to easily track down interesting or important things within the system. Not only is this new system a more realistic, satisfying and engaging exploration experience, but now you will be able to make more informed decisions on where to look next, and you will be more rewarded for your time spent exploring. Commanders will now have probes at their disposal to map the planetary surfaces, and planetary rings, in detail, to locate points of interest and leave your mark on the galaxy in a different way.

“All of the above, in addition to the new in-game codex where Commanders will see a new way of recording their findings in both a collaborative and individual way, are just a few things coming with the changes to exploration. We’re barely scratching the surface here with the changes to exploration, so make sure to tune in to the livestream on 18 October, to find out more.

Mining

“Asteroid belts and planetary rings are about to get very busy. New tools and mechanics will provide a fresh, exciting and lucrative mining experience for all Elite Dangerous Commanders. Using new exploration mechanics, miners can investigate rings to locate the best spots to start their mining sessions, and then the best specific asteroids to probe and excavate for rewards. With the right amount of skill and expertise, the new Abrasion blaster, Sub-surface displacement missile, and Seismic charge launcher, will provide some exciting and explosive results.

“Want to go deeper with these features and learn more about mining? Tune in to the livestream on 1 November, to find out more.

Squadrons

“Squadrons is a new in-game way of uniting like-minded Commanders to support factions of their choice, take part in Community Goals together and compete for top spots in seasonal leader boards. New communication tools, including in-game chat channels, will help you blaze trails together, and leave your Squadron’s mark on the galaxy.

“Learn more about Squadrons in our livestream on 30 October.

“…and more!

“There’s a number of other huge changes coming to Elite Dangerous, including visual improvements, background simulation updates, and (yet to be revealed) cockpit interface changes, and other features that we can’t wait to tell you about.

“Prior to the introduction of the content on the beta, we’ll be hosting a number of deep-dive livestreams with developer guests, where we showcase the content and you have the chance to voice your questions and comments.

The Chapter Four content reveal livestreams will be on the following dates:
Exploration, Codex and Visual Improvements – 18 October (19:00 BST)
BGS and Scenario Interactions – 25 October (19:00 BST)
Squadrons – 30 October (19:00 GMT)
Mining – 01 November (19:00 GMT)
The Ships – 8 November (19:00 GMT)

“If you’re not able to catch the streams, don’t worry! We will be posting a recap of the all the content unveiled shortly after each livestream.

“We can’t wait to see what you think!”

“Greetings Commanders,

“We are pleased to announce that Chapter Two of the Beyond series of updates is right around the corner. In just under a month, you’ll be able to get your hands on the Alliance’s newest Chieftain variant: the Alliance Challenger. We’ve also got a selection of new wing missions, installation interactions, new settlements to explore and, to combat the ever-growing and ever-encroaching Thargoid threat, a cache of new Guardian weapons and technology from the Tech Brokers.

“And… you’ll be able to explore it all for yourselves on 28th June.

“This is the first of the two smaller instalments coming as part of the Elite Dangerous Beyond series of updates, with a larger coming in Q4 of this year, bringing Squadrons and improvements to Mining and Exploration, and much more! If you’d like to contribute ideas and find out more about what’s coming in the Q4 update, please check out our Focused Feedback forums here.

“Please find a summary of Chapter Two’s content below.

Summary of features:

New Ship: Challenger
The Alliance continue to refine their warships in the face of the looming Thargoid threat. The Alliance Challenger, envisaged as a frontline combat vessel, has stronger armour than its Chieftain counterpart and will be able to soak up a significant amount of punishment.

Wing Missions
First introduced in Chapter One of Beyond, we are introducing a range of new Wing Mission types for you and your fellow Commanders to take on!

Installation Interactions
In a similar fashion to the Megaship interactions, which were introduced in Chapter One, Commanders will now be able to scan and interact with Space Installations.

  • Scan – Scanning the installation will allow Commanders to see what they can interact with: Turrets, Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
  • Turret hack – Disable turrets protecting other potential hackable points. This will deactivate security measures put in place to protect the Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
  • Comms array – Get tradeable data from the Comms Array.
  • Cargo bay – Fire a limpet on the Cargo Bay to unlock and steal commodities and materials.

Tech Broker
Tech Brokers will allow commanders to unlock large weapons versions of the existing guardian tech weapons. These Tech Brokers will issue missions to collect Guardian data as well as materials and then, once delivered, will unlock certain Guardian modules of weapons for purchase. Will you turn you weapons on Thargoid or use them to pirate rival Commanders?

Thargoid
Thargoids continue to be an intergalactic menace! With the Alliance introducing a new ship, the Thargoids intend to up their game too, introducing new Scouts that will buff other Scouts and increase their combat efficiency.”

Beyond: Open Beta Announcement

On the 12th January 2018 Frontier announced that the open beta for owners of Elite: Dangerous Horizons on PC & Mac will begin on the 25th January 2018. A teaser video can be seen below and a full rundown of all content in 2.4 can be found here. Details from Frontier can be seen below and here:

Greetings commanders,

At Frontier Expo 2017, we revealed the first details of season 3 of Elite Dangerous, called Elite Dangerous: Beyond – you can watch back the announcements here. Throughout 2018 we’re bringing four Beyond updates to Elite Dangerous Commanders which focus on adding new content, uncovering and progressing the mysteries of the galaxy and enhancing existing core gameplay experiences. These updates will consist of a number of additions with the first update detailed below, followed by two smaller content updates through the year and our largest update coming in Q4. Each update will be a new Chapter in the Elite Dangerous: Beyond season.

Today we’re pleased to announce that you’ll be able to test Chapter 1 of the series in the open beta coming to all PC Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons players on Thursday 25 January!

As always we welcome your feedback in our dedicated feedback livestreams, and on the beta and bug report forums. These beta tests have always been an incredibly useful and valuable part of development, and Beyond Chapter 1 will be no exception. Because of the huge number of core feature enhancements, the introduction of a new ship, and other numerous additions and improvements, we want to be sure that as many of you are able to experience and test the beta first-hand, for that reason we have decided to open this beta to all players of Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons on PC.

We’ll publish a full list of changes on beta launch day, but come along to our content livestreams on Tuesday 16 January at 7PM GMT and Thursday 18 January at 7PM GMT for a closer look at everything in this update. In the meantime, you can see a short summary of some of the features below.

New Ship: Chieftain
Elite Dangerous Horizons Commanders will also be able to take to the stars in the new Alliance Chieftain, designed not only to dish out punishment, but to avoid it. Manufactured by Lakon Spaceways, the Chieftain is more manoeuvrable than ships of similar size and weight, and its combat profile means it can more than hold its own in a fight.

Improved Core Mechanics
Chapter 1 of Beyond will bring improvements to some of Elite Dangerous’ core mechanics, including accessibility enhancements to the engineering mechanics, an overhaul of mission rewards and big changes to crime and punishment. We’ll be sharing more information on the changes to Crime and Punishment, and the Engineers in a future post here on the forums and in the live streams mentioned above.

Wing Missions
Chapter 1 of Beyond will give you the chance to take on wing missions with your fellow Commanders, sharing both the efforts and rewards.

Revised Trade Data
Commanders will now be able to access trade data from systems they have previously visited, in order to make more informed decisions when shipping goods across the Milky Way.

Planetary Visual Improvements
Chapter 1 also includes the first of the planetary visual improvements coming as part of the Beyond series of updates (with more surface level improvements coming later in the year) bringing a new vibrancy to the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

GalNet Audio
With the introduction of GalNet Audio, you will be able to catch up on the latest news from across the galaxy without ever leaving the action.
