Lavecon 2019 – Content Reveal

Frontier have announced details of forthcoming content as shown at Lavecon 2019. You can find this below or on the official site, here. The Post Beyond: An Overview section has been updated with the below details along with a new page for both of the September and December releases.

Hello everyone,

Elite Dangerous commanders from across the galaxy have come to celebrate all things Elite Dangerous at this year’s Lavecon.

The event is very much in full swing and moments ago, the team had the pleasure to take to the stage and unveil a few details about what’s coming next to Elite Dangerous in the September update. In addition to all of that, we also revealed what commanders can expect at the end of the year!

If you weren’t able to attend Lavecon this year, rest assured that we have you covered! Here’s a breakdown of everything that was revealed:

Discovery Scanner Special with Dav Stott – Lavecon Special!

Dav, Lead Server Developer, started the presentation by hosting his very own episode of Discovery Scanner, detailing some of the work made when we introduced Background Simulation faction changes in Beyond – Chapter Four. Rest assured, if you weren’t able to attend, we’ll be bringing back the episode in a future livestream!

New “In Ship” Starter Experience

Following on from what we set out to achieve with this year’s initial updates, we will be introducing a whole new starting experience right from the cockpit of a commander’s first ship, a loaned Sidewinder. With clearer instructions and guidance during the beginning of Elite Dangerous, we believe this will lead to a more engaging way to learn the basics and help commanders understand the tools they have at their disposal to become fully-fledged pilots. We can’t wait to see how these new commanders will involve themselves in the galaxy in the same way many of you have!

At the start of the experience, commanders will be guided through essential pilot training by a flight instructor from the Pilots Federation. During this training, a number of lessons will be taught to commanders, from space flight to combat.

  • Basic flight controls and scanning.
  • Supercruise and navigation.
  • A combat exercise around a megaship.
  • Culminating with the final lesson: completing one’s first Hyperspace Jump and docking at a starport.

All of the training will include VO across our supported languages, so whether you’re a commander, un commandant or ein kommandant, you’ll be able to follow each exercise without issue!

Veteran commanders out there who wish to experience the training will also be able to access it in the ‘Training Section’ via the right-hand panel.

New Livery System and Virtual Currency: Arx

Those on consoles will already be familiar with the concept of Frontier Points and, as part of the September Update, we’re reworking and rebranding them as Arx, across all platforms (including PC), ensuring the experience to acquire cosmetics is shared equally for commanders on any platform. This new currency can be purchased, as well as earned by simply playing the game, to acquire Game Extras such as Paint Jobs, Ship Kits, Bobbleheads and more!

As always with our optional additional purchases, Arx can only be used to buy cosmetic Game Extras and will not be used to introduce and acquire pay-to-win purchases. Ultimately, Arx will enable us to…

  • Bring parity across all of our platforms
At the current time, PC commanders purchase cosmetics directly from the Frontier Store with real world currency, while those on consoles must first purchase Frontier Points before acquiring that new and shiny Paint Job. With the introduction of Arx, the method of purchasing and spending Arx will be the same experience regardless of what platform you’re on.
  • Allow commanders to earn customisation items through gameplay
As part of the update to the livery system and the introduction of Arx, commanders will be able to acquire cosmetic items by simply playing the game! We won’t ask commanders to change how they play, simply being an active player and engaging with the game is all that’s required. A number of Arx can be earned each week and will be instantly added to a player’s Arx balance and can be spent there and then, or saved for later. We’ll have more details on how these can be earned in-game and the amount you can earn, closer to the release of the September Update.
  • Introduce a new, flexible and informed choice when purchasing Game Extras
We’ve made improvements to the entire in-game ship livery system, providing commanders with previews of all the different customisation options for their ships and multiple angles!Commanders will be able to purchase individual Game Extras that were previously only available in entire packs. For example, if you wanted the Anaconda White Pharaoh Paint Job, you would no longer need to purchase the entire Anaconda Horus Paint Pack to obtain it. We’re still going to be putting together bundles and packages, but this new system will allow commanders to buy the majority of Game Extras individually.
  • Offering commanders the ability to change their ship’s appearance from the main menu
One of the biggest improvements we are introducing is the ability to access the ship livery from the main menu, so even explorers out in the black will be able to change up their ship’s appearance without needing to head all the way back to civilization!

Please read our FAQ for all the information and post any of your questions about Arx here.

We couldn’t end the presentation without a glimpse of what’s coming at the end of the year: FLEET CARRIERS.

We’ll let the video below do the talking —MASSIVE FRAMESHIFT SURGE DETECTED–

We’ll have more details about the September Update and Fleet Carriers in the near future, so keep an eye on all of our future announcements and social channels!

We’d also like to extend a big thank you to all of the organisers of Lavecon and the commanders who are attending today to share their passion for all things Elite Dangerous. It’s time for us to get back to the action, so see you soon… and fly safe, commanders!

Lavecon 2018 – Beyond: News

On Saturday the 9th June 2018 Frontier attended the annual Lavecon meet and showcased some features coming in the Beyond Quarter 4 updates, as well as some things coming in the soon to be released Quarter 2 update.

You can see the details covering a large number of additions coming to Quarter 4 by visiting the page here. Changes to Quarter 2 can be seen here.

Beyond – Chapter Two Release Date

At 2:00pm on the 31st May 2018 Frontier announced the release details for Chapter Two of the Beyond series as well as a short teaser trailer. You can see them below or on the official forum here. The relevant pages on this website have been amended to reflect the new information.

“Greetings Commanders,

“We are pleased to announce that Chapter Two of the Beyond series of updates is right around the corner. In just under a month, you’ll be able to get your hands on the Alliance’s newest Chieftain variant: the Alliance Challenger. We’ve also got a selection of new wing missions, installation interactions, new settlements to explore and, to combat the ever-growing and ever-encroaching Thargoid threat, a cache of new Guardian weapons and technology from the Tech Brokers.

“And… you’ll be able to explore it all for yourselves on 28th June.

“This is the first of the two smaller instalments coming as part of the Elite Dangerous Beyond series of updates, with a larger coming in Q4 of this year, bringing Squadrons and improvements to Mining and Exploration, and much more! If you’d like to contribute ideas and find out more about what’s coming in the Q4 update, please check out our Focused Feedback forums here.

“Please find a summary of Chapter Two’s content below.

Summary of features:

New Ship: Challenger
The Alliance continue to refine their warships in the face of the looming Thargoid threat. The Alliance Challenger, envisaged as a frontline combat vessel, has stronger armour than its Chieftain counterpart and will be able to soak up a significant amount of punishment.

Wing Missions
First introduced in Chapter One of Beyond, we are introducing a range of new Wing Mission types for you and your fellow Commanders to take on!

Installation Interactions
In a similar fashion to the Megaship interactions, which were introduced in Chapter One, Commanders will now be able to scan and interact with Space Installations.

  • Scan – Scanning the installation will allow Commanders to see what they can interact with: Turrets, Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
  • Turret hack – Disable turrets protecting other potential hackable points. This will deactivate security measures put in place to protect the Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
  • Comms array – Get tradeable data from the Comms Array.
  • Cargo bay – Fire a limpet on the Cargo Bay to unlock and steal commodities and materials.

Tech Broker
Tech Brokers will allow commanders to unlock large weapons versions of the existing guardian tech weapons. These Tech Brokers will issue missions to collect Guardian data as well as materials and then, once delivered, will unlock certain Guardian modules of weapons for purchase. Will you turn you weapons on Thargoid or use them to pirate rival Commanders?

Thargoid
Thargoids continue to be an intergalactic menace! With the Alliance introducing a new ship, the Thargoids intend to up their game too, introducing new Scouts that will buff other Scouts and increase their combat efficiency.”

Radio Lave: Mission Q&A

On the 27th March 2018 Radio Lave did an interview with Adam Bourke-Waite of Frontier on the way missions work in the game, what they involve and how they have evolved.  One interesting piece of information is that as of the weekend of 24th March there have been 1,673,246 completed missions. You can find the interview here starting at 18 mins 20 seconds.

Beyond: Beta – Q&A

Sandro Sammarco answered a long list of questions regarding both the upcoming Beyond series of updates and the general future of the game. You can see some selected ones below.

Note: There has been no release date given as of yet for 3.0.

Q. Extra module storage?
A. This has now been doubled to 120.

Q. Will SLF’s have outfitting capabilities?
A. Nothing to announce, something they may do at some point but will be done when it fits in the schedule.

Q. Limpet Bay?
A. Frontier are looking at a Limpet controller rack that will store a number of controllers in them.

Q. Tracker limpet?
A. In the big list and very much wanted.

Q. Any chance of being able to change the colours of the HUD display?
A. Not at the moment as it’s a significant amount of work.

Q. Engineer tech brokers weapons?
A. Very likely to happen in Beyond at some point.

Q. Will the Discovery Scanner and surface scanner see updates?
A. Yes, later in 3.0 as part of the exploration update Frontier will look at all of these.

Q. Will ATR Ships become persistent? (ie. they will follow players out of a system)
A. Sandro said this would be looked at, but not until they have seen how ATR operates in the initial release.

Q. Are Frontier looking at using mega-ship interactions in other areas such as capital ships, combat zone and planetary outposts etc.?
A. Yes. Looking at a few areas but no further comment at the moment.

Q. Can Combat zones and RES sites be improved?
A. Yes, these sites will be looked at but these are long term plans.

Q. Will bookmarks be colour coded and see other updates?
A. Yes, these and possible other changes could well come when they introduce the codex later in Beyond.

Q. Changes to Powerplay?
A. They would like to integrate missions into powerplay and have some ideas, but no ETA, guarantees.

Q. Any plans to stop players from permanently boosting their ship engines? (specifically as it’s causing issues during battle)
A. Yes, this will be looked at as it should not be at a loss of tactics during battle.

Q. Will there be further iterations of wing missions?
A. Yes, there will be more wing missions coming.

Q. Changes to smuggling?
A. Yes, but nothing to comment on at the moment.

Q. Will it be possible to re-name engineered modules?
A. It’s on the list.

Q. NPC Crew & Wings?
A. It’s something we want to do, but we need a bunch of other stuff such as communicating with NPC’s and more rules to govern them, so not at the moment.

Q. Any plans for changes to the Asp Scout?
A. There are some “come cool plans for the Asp Scout, that I’m not allowed to talk about”.

Q. Will colour changes to planets reflect the content of the planets?
A. No, but the exploration mechanics in the 3.4 update will assist with figuring this out.
